I’ve often wondered if anyone made use of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button on the Google website, as I have never seen the point of it. In an interview on the Washington Post website with Marissa Mayer, vice president for search products and user experience for Google, she states that fewer than 1% of users ever make use of the button. Although it’s never used, Mayer admits that it would not be removed because it was part of their heritage.
Google faces a challenge in trying to keep the minimal look while moving towards the “unified search” of it’s competitors, which display video, blogs, ads and photos along with the standard web text results. The article mentions that to be listed on the Google homepage a service must receive more than 10 million page views a day. I’m surprised that Froogle or “Products” as it’s now boringly known, has not proved popular and is now relegated to the “More” drop down, as I find this option invaluable when searching for the best price on products.
