Internet Explorer 7 Weirdness

01Apr08

I made the mistake of trying to move my Temporary Internet Files folder from my system disk to a dedicated data disk using the “Move Folder…” button. This can be foundĀ on the window that appears after pressing “Delete…” on the “General” tab of the Internet Properties for Internet Explorer 7 on Vista SP1.

When you press the “Move Folder…” button you’re given the option to browse to a new folder. Vista then moves the folder (and presumably it’s contents but I can’t be sure) and forces you to logoff to complete the process. All seems well.

However when you actually try using Internet Explorer after the folder has been moved, all sorts of weirdness starts to happen. The phishing filter stops working claiming it can’t contact Microsoft, your unable to create book marks, trying to download files results in IE claiming the website can’t be contacted and navigating the bookmarks slows to a crawl.

It turns out that although the folder is moved, IE fails to set the correct attributes on the folder. Luckily all is explained under Microsoft Article ID 937828. Applying the integrity level using the following command to the new folder was all that was required for IE to start working again.

Icacls folder_path/setintegritylevel L
